Over the years I have seen many great games that Oak Grove has participated in. In my opinion, these are simply the best I have seen...
...as a player.
Southern Lab at Oak Grove 1989 In the second round playoff game in 1989, an undefeated Southern Lab team came to Oak Grove. Lab was 10-0 and their first round playoff opponent had forfeited because they didn't want to play them. I had never heard of that. I was only 16 and had not seen many games or much film so needless to say I thought they looked like NFL players. They came out and scored 20 points on us so fast nobody even realized how bad it was. They missed an extra point and I remember telling someone on the sideline that it was going to cost them. We got a score before half and two more in the second half and ended up winning 21-20.
...since I've been coaching.
Oak Grove at Port Barre 1997 Mike Collins and I were in our first year of coaching at Sterlington. We had lost to Kentwood the week before so we, along with Jason Custer and Mike's daughter Chelsea, made the trip to see the semifinal match up at Port Barre. I had never seen them play. They jumped out big, but couldn't put the Tigers away. Oak Grove was 15 points down in the fourth quarter, when Port Barre's All-State MVP running back goes to the sideline in one of the biggest mysteries I've ever seen. O.G. had not stopped this kid all night. Anyway, the Tigers scored two Touchdowns and converted both two point conversions to go up by 1 point. Oak Grove got the ball back and ran out the clock when Fullback Ryan Elliot picked up a big first down with a minute to go from midfield. He came up out of the pile and raised his arms in the shape of a "Dome." Oak Grove 37-36.
...before I played high school football.
University at Oak Grove 1986 I remember watching this game with the most attentive focus I had ever had. I was in the 7th grade. U-High was fast and big and Oak Grove stood toe to toe with them the entire night. The biggest crowd, up to that point, that I had seen at a football game. Oak Grove defeated the Cubs 25-21 in an electric atmosphere! After the game people were jumping up and down screaming, "WE'RE GOING TO THE DOME!! WE'RE GOING TO THE DOME!!
...in the Superdome.
Oak Grove vs. Port Sulphur in 2001 Prep Classic This thing was more like a track meet than a football game. I have sit in the Superdome and watched games 18 different years and I have never seen two teams go up and down the field, with big play after big play, like these two did. Port Sulphur lit Oak Grove's Defensive Backs up for 409 yards passing and 14 passing first downs. Both are still Dome records. But when it counted, the O.G. secondary picked off a pass in the end zone with a little over a minute to go, to secure the 35-34 win and the school's 4th State Championship.
Honorable mention:
1986 Mangham at Oak Grove - Tony Davis to John Bowers pass in closing minute. O.G. wins 12-7.
2007 Caldwell at Oak Grove - Caldwell QB spikes the ball on 4th down inside the O.G. 3 yard line with seconds to go.
1988 OCS at Oak Grove - We held OCS's QB in check all night.
